Skin care products at Whole Foods?

Labels:

How good are the skin care products sold at whole foods and other natural/health food stores? Specifically I'm referring to zia, Men's Stock, Alba, and Vitamin C. How effective are they? How do they compare to olay and clean and clear products?

Answer
I prefer natural products over synthetic chemical ones like Olay and Clean & Clear. Your skin absorbs whatever you put on it, so to me, if you wouldn't put it in your mouth, don't put it on your body. The Alba line is awesome, I've used all the Hawaiian line, and I love it. It smells great, and it give a really good clean. Certain cleansers are better than others depending on your skin type. If you have oily skin, avoid the cream cleansers (llike Alba's coconut milk cleanser) and go instead for the sudsy ones, and vice versa if you have dry skin. It's really great stuff, and you can usually find a little sample kit to try before buying the larger sizes. It's worth a try!

Any recommendations for skin care products available at Whole Foods in NJ?

curious122

I have dry, somewhat sensitive (but clear) skin. I'm caucasian. I would like to try 'organic' skin products. Looking for cleanser, toner, and moisturizer (for the face). Please let me know if you have any recommendations. Please recommend products that you can buy at Whole Foods. Thanks.

Answer
I buy all of my skincare products at Whole Foods. I have oily skin, so I can't tell you exactly what kinds to use, but I can recommend my favorite brands. Dr. Hauschka is one of my all-time favorites and it has a wide variety of products. Though it is quite pricey, it makes my skin feel and look great. I also like Collective Well-being; their cleansers and moisturizers are excellent, but I'm not sure if they make toners.

Answer
I am a Registered Nurse and I specialize in skin care and teen acne.

After 12 years in this profession I find that most of my patients who deal with acne or brekout problems DO NOT SEE RESULTS from commercial products sold at drung stores or the mall. They usually contain too much benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or sulfur which tends to OVER DRY the skin and cause itching or irritations.

Also, home remedies such as lemon juice or alcohol or toothpaste SHOULD NEVER BE USED because they cause small tears in the skin and leave the skin more susceptible to bacteria that causes pimples or acne.

Your question is very broad and you need to get professional advice. I will explain why it's a broad question!

Your age plays a role! Do you always have breakouts?

However, acne can result from several factors such an increase in hormone levels. In males testosterone or androgens. In females, androgens respectively. The increase in androgen levels can stimulate the oil glands to become enlarged and thus more oil production is produced. An increased oil production can clog the pores with oil or sebum ( white thick substance) which cause the cell walls of the pores in the skin to breakdown. This process allows bacteria to form and thus breakouts develop.

Genetics may also be a cause. It is a myth that greasy food or chocolate causes breakouts.

However, using make-up sponges that are not changed or washed often can contaminate the pores with bacteria which may develop into acneic breakouts.

Teenagers going through hormonal and growth changes are prone to acne.

If you have severe breakouts than you might need medication. There are many factors.

The most important thing is that you need products that are AGE APPROPRIATE! Every age group has different products appropriate for them. If you are young than you need milder products as to not dry out your beautiful young skin.

The problem with commercial skin products is that they are manufactured for MASSES OF PEOPLE and are not specifically made for different peoples' needs.

Your skin type is different than mine and your age differs from mine so how is it logical that we both use the same skin product for breakouts. We need different strengths of cleansers and toners. Do you kind of understand what I am getting at?

Here is my STRONG SUGGESTION for you. I refer all my students and patients to this website:

www.aboutyourskincare.com

You need to consult with professionals and on this website YOU CAN ASK QUESTIONS FOR FREE AND A SKIN EXPERT/PHYSICIAN WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS. It would be a shame if you dont take advantage of this free service.

Lastly, they have incredible products for breakouts and they make them specifically for every kind of skin type. That means that if your breakouts are more severe than mine, than while we both will buy the same product yours will have stronger ingredients than mine will.

They have a mild glycolic acid cleanser that's great for your type of skin and also a DRYING LOTION ( I have 3 bottles) that you put directly on your breakouts and the next day it's gone. It's truely magic in a bottle.

A basic guideline for properly taking care of your skin is this ( now if you're a young girl you will need fewer products than this):

Night time:

1. Exfoliate the skin
2. Mild Glycolic Acid Cleanser
3. Mild Glycolic Acid Toner ( cleans off the excess debris and balances the PH level of the skin).
4. Drying Lotion used only on breakouts
5. Moisturizer

Morning:

1. Mild Glycolic Acid Cleanser
2. Moisturizing cream

The above is a standard you may need to only use one or two products. Visit: www.aboutyourskincare.com

As I suggested and click on the ASK FOR FREE section send them an email and you will get free expert skin care advice.

Good Luck to you,
Michelle

How good is my skin care routine?

G

On most days I:

Cleanse using an acne control cleanser containing 2% Salicylic Acid
Tone using a 5% homemade tea tree oil solution
Moisturize with Clean and Clear 0.5% salicylic acid
Apply sunscreen with zinc oxide if I plan to be in the sun long

At night I use a Neutrogena retinol cream instead of the clean and clear moisturizer.
Every 4 days, I use a facial scrub in place of the cleanser.
In winter, I sometimes use Vitamin E oil or olive oil as a moisturizer
Every 2 weeks I use a turmeric and honey face mask

Answer
Your skin care routine sounds very good if you are having issues with acne. Salicylic acid is very drying and will help slough off skin cells so they don't clog and create blackheads. So good choice on that. The tea tree is going to also be drying but in addition is antibacterial so another good choice.

Zinc oxide is a great sunscreen and is also very healing to damaged skin... so also good.

Retinol makes me a little nervous because of the research showing it can cause birth defects even after you stop using it. Or, maybe I'm behind the times... I haven't actually been keeping up with the retinol products and the research behind them. Does anyone else know about this issue?

Facial scrub every four days sounds about right so you don't dry your skin too much. Vitamin E and olive oil are also both good choices. I've never heard of a turmeric honey face mask but it sounds very healing as honey is an ancient remedy for skin troubles and is hydrophilic which means it is going to make your skin hydrated, moist and very soft. It is also antibacterial -- as is turmeric.

The only other things I would add are changing your pillow case every night to prevent bacterial cross contamination (this actually works better than you would think! You can also try switching to organic all cotton, or organic linen pillowcases as an underlying allergy to the chemicals and synthetic materials in regular pillowcases may exacerbate or even be the main cause of acne, also pay attention to your laundry soap.)

Secondly, add a rice water cleanser every now and then. Daily is best. If you haven't heard about rice water, Michelle Phan has an excellent tutorial about how to make it, use it and store it. It is a fabulous skin toner for any kind of skin. And very easy and cheap to make. Basically you add rice to water and let it sit in the fridge for a couple of hours - separate the water from the rice and then put the "rice water" on your face using a soft clean cloth. You can also use it as a facial by soaking the cloth and leaving it on your face for 15 minutes. I was astonished at how well it worked. It leaves your skin feeling ten times as smooth and soft as it was before. You can see the pores on your skin shrinking. Amazing. And so cheap!

I looked on the website and it seems like a great product to use. Has anybody bought the products that were specifically chosen for them? Did they work?

IF you are using it for acne or oily skin these products USUALLY DO NOT WORK!

Your question is very broad and you need to get professional advice. I will explain why it's a broad question!

I was thinking of getting one of these for my acne but cant decide which one they both look good. Please tell your opinion on which one works best or is better then the other. if u used both that would be great help but just day which one worked best for you.

In my experience of 12 years alot of commercial store bought products DO NOT WORK! They contain way too much benzoyl peroxide which over dries your skin and causes irritations. Often they contain too much of what you dont need, or too little of what you do need!

PLEASE READ THIS WITH YOUR MOM if you are under 18, I have a great solution for you!

Answer
try a facial mask or ask a dermatologist (skin care doctor) for a good skin care product.

usually in magazines and commercials, they use foundation and also digitally enhance their features for better looking skin. almost no one has perfect skin!

try using a daily cleanser, but it might dry out your skin. you also may have a very mild case of excema on your face, so again, ask your dermatologist

What are the steps to Japanese skin care?

bluetsuki3

I've seen some scans in Japanese magazines and the girls stick paper on to their faces. I think it's to put on toner, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know what is Japanese skin care routine?

Answer
Ever wondered how the Japanese manage to look so young? Women from Japan just don't age at the same rate as most women. It's all due to Japanese skincare secrets. For example, a Japanese woman can be in her mid forties or even fifties and look like she is only in her mid twenties. What's even more astonishing is that high end cosmetics and plastic surgery are rarely involved. The question is...just how do Japanese women, even those who are middle-aged, manage to look like teenagers?

You may be surprised to learn that the secret to Japanese skincare is not entirely involved with what they put on their faces. Many analysts agree that Japanese beauty regimens and skin care is much different from that of the Western world. Reputable autorities state that the Japanese diet plays a big role in their beauty secrets.

Although big chain food franchises such as McDonald's and KFC are a huge success in Japan, they are only regarded and indulged in as an occasional treat. Because Japanese people love seafood, which has an abundance of essential fatty acids, their skin is naturally nourished by it on a regular basis. They believe in food that is prepared simply and as close to it's natural state as possible, free of chemicals. This accounts partially for why their skin appears to remain so supple and smooth well beyond what one would expect.

In Japan, cosmetic and skin care is very different. Chemically, Japanese cosmetics are considerably lighter than those in the Western world. Most Japanese cosmetics are derived from herbs and essential oils, with many containing food substances, one of which is one of the best kept secrets of how the Japanese maintain a youthful and healthy complexion. It is called Phytessence Wakame. Phytessence Wakame is native to Japan and is a type of kelp. Japanese people eat it, whether dried or fresh. What is amazing about it is that it can be transformed into extracts and applied directly to the skin as well, providing dramatic results.

What's In Phytessence Wakame?

As stated above, Phytessence Wakame is a type of kelp. It contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals essential to beautiful skin. It is extremely rich in B-complex vitamins, as well as minerals, calcium, and potassium. In extract form, this ingredient offers superior Japanese skincare, and now you can enjoy the benefits for your skin also. Studies have shown that this amazing ingredient helps to keep skin moisturized, elastic, smooth and, to put it plainly, absolutely beautiful.

How does Phytessence Wakame work?

You could think of Phytessence Wakame as an inhibitor of the bad stuff, in a sense. That is to say, there's an enzyme in our bodies called hyaluronidase. What hyaluronidase does is break down hyaluronic acid, which is absolutely essential to the skin's smoothness, elasticity and youthful appearance.

Just remember and understand that hyaluronidase is not good. Hyaluronic acid is. What Phytessence Wakame does is prevent, or inhibit, the hyaluronidase from breaking down hyaluronic acid, which promotes the healthy skin you want.

So there you have it. Now you know one of Japan's best kept secrets. Japanese skincare is very effective. Keep in mind that diet does play a role in skin health and beauty. That, coupled with a simpler yet highly effective Japanese skincare routine can help you to have the youthful glowing complexion you desire.

Skin lightening cream?

I swim a lot and I get really dark. Would it be safe for me to use a skin lightening cream because of all the chlorine in the pool?

Answer
If you want to swim, they have INDOOR swimming pools.
In the beauty industry, there is no industry-agreed meaning for terms like 'organic' or 'natural'. Unlike the food industry, these terms are not regulated for cosmetics which means companies can use these terms pretty freely.
Also, products like shampoo, conditioner and body wash are mostly made of water so therefore are mostly natural (because water is natural, right?). So if a shampoo is 90% water, then a company can simply claim "90% organic or natural" and be telling the truth. Certainly, this isn't in the spirit of what people believe organic to mean, but it is within the law.

Don't believe the hype: "For skin care products, 'organic is not enough,. Some organic products are fabulous, and some are not." ~ Dr. Lisa Chipps , M.D. specializes in removing skin cancer & repairing the resultant wound (laser therapy whiz) in Rodeo Drive.
"Organic skin care products are trendy, but that does not mean nonorganic ones are dangerous," Wendy E. Roberts, M.D. past president of the Women's Dermatologic Society.

FYI:
The FDA have banned 23 more whitening products. Google it. About 17,600,000 results.
The reason cited for the proposed ban is that studies in rodents show "some evidence" that hydroquinone may act as a carcinogen or cancer-causing chemical, although its cancer-causing properties have yet to be proved in humans. Hydroquinone also has been linked with the medical condition known as ochronosis in which the skin becomes dark and thick. Dome-shaped yellowish spots and grayish-brown spots also are observed in ochronosis among black women and men in South Africa, Britain, and the U.S. Ochronosis has been observed in conjunction with hydroquinone use even in persons who have used hydroquinone-containing cosmetics for a short time. Some studies also report abnormal function of the adrenal glands and high levels of mercury in people who have used hydroquinone-containing cosmetics. For these reasons, hydroquinone has already been banned in Japan, the European Union, and Australia.

Any skin-lightening products containing hydroquinone would be considered new drugs, according to the proposed FDA regulations. The products would require FDA approval before being sold to the public and would only be available with a doctor's prescription.

The sun and too much soaking in the tub or pool ARE SKIN'S WORST ENEMIES.

Best sunscreen: wear denim clothing, floppy hat, or umbrella. They were invented to protect us from the elements.

Your tan will fade after several months even years, depends how old you are now. I was a vendor outside, sitting only in the shade, until a car parked in front of me, the glass reflecting right @ me, during sunset, caused my chest to tan (not burn) and discolored, for about 3 weeks. Use a wash cloth to exfoliate, allowing new skin to take over, when you take a shower and use bath & body wash.

I've been protecting myself from the sun since I was 9.

1. Because I don't want to look like a farmer.
2. Because I get too hot.
3. I want to look like movie stars & models, they have blemish-free skins.
4. I don't want to look like an old prune or get moles on my neck & face like my aunts.

No matter, I still got Discoid Lupus (Google it), caused from the sun. It took 12 years for them to fade. Tried all kinds of lotions that were prescribed to me, and none of them worked. More & more now I protect myself and I take my wide brim hat everywhere I go, or use an umbrella. Floppy hats are back in style. In Asia, they use umbrella all the time. Here in the States, people started to catch on, and I see people walking w/umbrella, they are used on the beach, and they sell patio umbrellas. It was invented for a reason and also to protect us from getting skin cancer. Wear long jackets, or denim a lot. Even inside a car, the heat alone from the sun can tan anyone.

Then i moisturize with the same moisturizer and i Oh and i only exfoliate my skin at night

Should i use a toner???
I am going to start wearing sun screen but will that make my oily skin worse?
Then also should i start wear a eye cream so it dosent dry out and get pre mature wrinkles?
What one do you recomened?
THANKS!!!!

Answer
You're 15 and you're doing too much for your skin. I'm 60 and have been doing the same routine as when I was 15.

The less products you use, the better for your skin. Use a bath wash like Suave Bath & Body Gel, use a washcloth. Treat your face like the rest of your body, take a shower everyday or wash your face everyday.

The secret is keeping your face clean and oil-free. I also don't use liquid on my face for anything, and very little moisturizer, not even a dime size. Since my face is not dry. Good skin also comes from your good genes. Increase your fresh fruits & vegetables 3-5 servings per day. And programmed your mind to do this day after day, for the rest of your life.

Acne medication could worsen what ever allergies you have, so instead of trying out one product after another, you're actually spreading it around. Example: ProActiv contains a known carcinogen, at a percentage known to promote skin cancer.

Smoking has been shown to make acne worse since it diminishes the delivery of oxygen to the skin and robs it of nutrients, thereby inhibiting cars from healing. Not enough reason to quit? Smoke depletes moisture, making skin lose its luster and look wrinkly.

The beauty industry is a billion dollar business, they know acne is everyone's problem, but instead of saying soap is drying for you, they have to invent an acne product that can worsen the skin as MANY TEENAGERS have experienced during hormonal change, but as you get older those are completely a waste of time & money!

The FDA has called for more safety studies on benzoyl peroxide because of concern about what happens when skin treated with it is exposed to the sun. Until research can establish or disprove a possible skin cancer link to the use of benzoyl peroxide products, the agency plans to require an extra warning and directions on the labeling: "When using this product, avoid unnecessary sun exposure and use sunscreen." and "If going outside, use a sunscreen. Allow [product name] to dry, then follow directions in the sunscreen labeling. If irritation or sensitivity develops, discontinue use of both products and consult a doctor."

Source(s)
I get one tiny zit a month or none. I have very clear, soft & silky complexion and I'm 60 years old, same as when I was in HS.

is it bad to put anti-aging facewash or moisturizer on younge skin?

Answer
Skin follows a biological timeline, by decades of life. During your 20s and 30s, the first wrinkles start to appear and skin becomes less resistant as elasticity declines and gravity begins to take hold. In your 40s and 50s, repetitive movements form the first permanent wrinkles as genetics, gravity and a decrease in collagen and elastin cause skin and muscle to sag.

Since I don't know what age category you fall into, it's hard to give you a full and accurate answer to your question. I wouldn't really start using anti-aging products until you are in your mid-30s or older because your skin just doesn't need that much additional help before then. The best prevention against wrinkles and skin damage is to use a good quality sunscreen each and every day.

Arbonne offers a full range of botanically-based skin care products that contain no animal products or byproducts, no mineral oil (which is really bad for you), and are pure, safe and beneficial. If you'd like more information go to:

What is this darkening of skin running along my shin bone?

joe friday

I'm African-American and a 48-year-old female. Over the past few months, I've noticed the development of a slightly darkened area of skin. It's about eight inches long and an inch wide, and runs vertically along my shin bone. It looks like a bruise, but there's been no injury there, and there's never been any pain associated with it. I also seem to be getting the same thing on my left shin now, though it's not as well defined yet. Is this normal for some people as they age, or could it be a sign of some underlying problem?

Answer
African American skin discolorations may be caused by underpigmentation or hyperpigmentation of the skin. The results are patches that are either lighter or darker than the person's natural skin tone. Although most skin discolorations are not exclusive to African Americans, they are more noticeable in people with darker skin tones.

Hyperpigmentation is usually evident in skin that has been damaged by acne or other scarring. After the acne or other scar has healed, darker shades appear, due to the melanin in dark skin, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Melanin gives skin its color.

I would go to a dermatologist to have these discolorations looked at. Any changes in skin color or texture should be evaluated by a physician, because they can be a sign of serious medical conditions such as melanoma. Since you are in your late 40s you are at a heightenedd risk for skin cancers anyway. Go to your primary care physician to be evaluated. The doctor can give you far more accurate information than what you can get on this website.

SKIN CARE???????????

Labels:

mimibwc

Alrighty guys. So at Christmastime i bought the Clinique 3 Step in Type 2 (Dry Combination), but all the way up until now, it was doing its job as a good cleanser but the main reason I bought it was for it to clear up my acne. I've heard such raves about it and I was soo disappointed when it didn't work for me. I'm 13 and my acne is Moderate. Most are on forehead and once my skin even starts getting better I break out once again.

So a few weeks ago, my friend had the 3-Step in Combination Oily, and she says it worked GREAT for her (cleared almost everything up), and i know that different regimens work for different people, but that got me thinking, I might have gotten the wrong skin type. I mean I've begun to realize my t-zone feels a little oily, and also, you're skin pretty much needs to be oily to have acne right?

So my question is should I get the Type 3? Or should I get some other skincare routine? (I was also thinking of proactive). Also I have already tried Acne Free and its horrible for me.

THANKS!! I APPRECIATE IT!!!
Oh i do already have the Wave!
And i use Saint Ives Apricot Scrub too :)

Answer
OK first of all i read that really long answer about foods to eat, but the truth is there is no evidence that foods or things you eat or drink have any effect on acne. dermatologists just say to stay away from things that trigger acne.

are you changing your pillow case regularly? that can cause acne
are your makeup brushes clean? bacteria can case acne
is your makeup non-condegenic or non-acne genic? makeup can clog your pores

you dont need to buy a lot of fancy stuff to have clear skin. of course i would definately try the 3 step system you want to try!

if that doesnt work here's my routine that really has been working for me and i have it seems like the same skin type. my nose gets kind of oily by the end of the day and the rest is normal and sometimes dry.

in the morning i wash my face with clean and clear morning burst. then i put cetaphil daily moisturizer on.

at night i take off my makeup with loreal deep 360 clean cleanser. the green one. only i suggest trying the cream one, the green one is making my face really dry...but it gets off all my makeup and it feels so good!
every other day after i take off my makeup ill use the clean and clear blackhead scrub. (i get blackheads on my nose)
after washing my face i put neutorgena rapid clear toner on any blemishes (THIS STUFF WORKS!! gets rid of zits over night! love ittt)
then i moisturize again with my cetaphil.

Jobs/careers that involve skin care?

minnie

I know of being a dermatologist and an esthetician but I am wondering if there are any others out there?
I really love skin and making sure it is healthy/looks healthy is fun to me.

Answer
Hi,
why not go for it there are several jobs avail dear, u can be a Professional Makeup Artist ...it deal with skin in the aspect that they must know the basics of skin to know how to cover and deal with skin issues when working professionally but other than that their specialty is really the art of makeup.

A beauty advisor is someone who learns a lines specific products ( mac, clarins, clinique, etc) and teaches people how to apply those products, helps them find the best products for their skin type, and sell them the product.

Thanxs

how do all the beauty gurus on youtube have such perfect skin?

Labels:

Hannah

I take really really really good care of my skin.. wash it with all natural products.. I eat fruit and salads twice a day sometimes with a bit of chicken.. today I am having fish! I drink 64 oz of water basically everyday...

Is it their editing stuff, lighting, hd quality, or just that the only people that ever film on youtube are just basically perfect because the ones who aren't perfect are not confident enough 2 do it ie; me lol.. if it is their editer that can make them look flawless and you know what they use... please please tell me.. because I am actually wanting to be a beauty guru; maybe ahha

Answer
Truth be told, the more crap that you put on your skin, the crappier you'll appear,
particularly when you are *IN* the limelight.  I've seen several beauty-guru videos
whose complexion could be seen right through their makeup.  Unknown to them
and many girls, it is that goop which is ruining their complexion in the first place.
Either you've got 'the skin', or you don't.

SKIN CARE GURUS.. Listen up, I need your help!?

xox

have very oily skin as well as redness and un even skin tone. This makes foundation hard to apply/last through out the day. Also when I feel my face i feel bumps, not pimples but more like dry patches/black/ white heads on my noes and cheeks.(i have alot of black and white heads my nose. They go deep down. I get rid of them for a week and they come back. Poors strips only get a few of them. (i unfortunately inherited this from my mother who has huge pores and alot of black heads. Hers looks more like holes.. some of mine look like holes as well as i feel the grainyness when i run my fingers over my face &some are deep down)

I use to wash my face with clean and clear morning brust scrub, to get rid of the grainy feel/dead skin but found this made my skin way more oily. Which cleared the uneven FEEL of my skin but my oil production sky rocketed especialy around my nose/ cheeks and chin.

I've used Clean and clear cream cleanser (in the yellow/white bottle AS well as the Green and white bottle for redness)

Clean and clear morning burts scrub, St.ives mask (clay mask for oil). Oxy pads.. but found they dried me out.

Any thing i could use to reduce oil production as well as soothe redness/even skin tone(the look of it) as well as evening it out not have rough patches that my makeup doesnt sit well on? I find it makes my make up look gross/cakey and grainy. I use both liquid foundation as well as a setting powder

Any drugstore products to use, or home remidies, BOTH is even better. :)

Answer
Look at Clinique's website or go to your counter. I know its not drugstore but i highly doubt your going to find a drugstore remedie for your problems. The people at clinique are amazing. clinique has a whole line of skincare products and makeup for redness. FOr your pores i would recommend the pore refining solutions instant perfector which is about $18 For your blackheads I would recommend the 7 day scrub cream. And for your oiliness you should take the three step quiz to see what skin type you are and stuff. I know it sounds like i am promoting clinique but the company really knows what its doing

What is the difference between esthiology and esthetics?

Labels:

Hate n

Right now I am interested in going to Aveda institute and they listed the variety of programs the have. I'm interested in skin care and I know those two are about skin care, but why are they two separate programs? Please someone explain the difference, it will greatly help.

Answer
Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste, and with the creation and appreciation of beauty.

Esthiology professionals provide advanced spa services, including facials, hydrotherapy, body treatments, massage therapy, laser hair removal, traditional hair removal services and skin care consultations.

What exactly is a microdermabrasion treatment?

I Love My

Im 20, and I have this coupon for a skin care place for a free 15 minute microdermabrasion.. what exactly does the microderm. do?

Answer
Microdermabrasion (often referred to as Microderm) is a cosmetic procedure popular in day spas, doctors' practices, and medical spas in which the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. Different methods include mechanical abrasion from jets of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals, fine organic particles, or a roughened surface. Particles are removed off through the wand/handpiece through which the abrasive particles come [1] The term dermabrasion itself refers to the more severe medical procedure carried out under general or light anesthesia.

Microdermabrasion is used to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on the skin. The procedure is not very painful and requires no anaesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars. There is very little, if any, evidence that microdermabrasion stimulates collagen formation. Microdermabrasion can also be used for treatment of acne, but must be repeated periodically to be effective. Microdermabrasion should not be used on patients who have taken the medication Accutane (Isotretinion) in the previous twelve months.

In the past, microdermabrasion was carried out using abrasive crystals. However, in the last decade, it has become more common to use a wand with a roughened surface. This procedure requires no medical oversight and is commonly used in conjunction with facial spa treatments. These days there are a multiplicity of machines available for microdermabrasion.

The growth of the microdermabrasion treatment industry has led to innovations and there are currently a few different microdermabrasion systems available. In terms of professional microdermabrasion systems there are two choices:

1. Crystal microdermabrasion Crystal microdermabrasion systems are the traditional treatment of choice and rely on tiny crystals that are blasted onto the skin to perform the exfoliating process. Although the crystal microdermabrasion system is still widely used, the introduction of alternatives has led to a trend away from this treatment system.

2. Diamond microdermabrasion Diamond microdermabrasion systems operate without the need for crystals. The exfoliation process occurs when a diamond tipped head makes contact with the skin and abrades against it. In both crystals and diamond microdermabrasion systems the dead skin cells are sucked away from the face.

3. Home Microdermabrasion Home microdermabrasion systems are an increasingly popular alternative to professional treatments. These are cheap and very easy to perform, and although not as powerful as professional systems, can produce good results over time. There is a great deal of competition in the home microdermabrasion systems market with most of the big cosmetics and skin care brands launching their own home systems.

Microdermabrasion is a procedure where tiny particles "sand" or "polish" the skin and gradually remove scarred or discolored epidermal tissue. When you use a home microdermbrasion system the surface skin cell turnover will be enhanced and the skin will be visibly fresher. Home microdermabrasion creams with active ingredients, are focused on skin renewal and accelerate rebuilding of healthy collagen skin cells after microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing or harsh peels. For depressed scars, such as pitted acne scars, subcision with needles is often used by estheticians to break up the deeply buried scar tissue, and a home microdermabrision system then speeds up new healthy skin remodeling: the orderly process of laying out new collagen and elastin fibers.

Hi, as you all know Christmas is tomorrow and I need a gift for my sister asap. I have no idea what to get her, so I need some suggestions. I know she's into punk music, likes Tumblr and knows how to skate, she's not too girly more like "hipster grunge." (As I've seen on her tumblr) She dresses more punk or "hipster" as well. She's very serious. Any ideas? I can't think of anything. Thank you.
Jack, she isn't 18 yet, and she hates the smell.

Answer
The itunes gift card is a good idea so she can spend it however she wants. Maybe a gift card to her favorite clothing store. I want to say, skin care or maybe even makeup. I'm 17 and I know I'd love that...although your sister and I are two different people.

Merry Xmas.
Or you can get her earphones, in case her current ones break. I'm getting those for my brother.

When did we, us people as a whole, become so supercial and obsessed with what everyone else thinks about us?

/-**-((J

It seems to be programed into our heads at birth and we spend the rest of our lives trying to stop caring. Why? Why do people care about what everyone else thinks?

Answer
The way I see it is that humans, as a species, are social animals -- so there is a genetic, "programmed" factor in being self-conscious, socially-aware and our interest in the way others think of us.

Modern culture has thrown this into hyper-drive, especially for our generation. Smart-phones, facebook, instagram, tumblr, snap-chat, kik, etc causes us to be constantly bombarded with images of ourselves and others that are literally put up for social acceptance, "likes", "follows" whatever name they are given on whatever platform. Cosmetics and a consumerist culture also feed into superficiality. In order to get us to keep buying, we need to be convinced that we are, in fact, lacking in something -- whether it be the latest fashion trend, flawless skin, perfect hair.

It really creates this soup of self-consciousness.

What is a good skin care routine to get great skin?

skin care masks image

Q. I'm starting a new skin care routine in the morning.
What is your routine and what products do you use?

I'm looking for a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, exfoliator, mask to all have on hand. Thank you :)

Answer
I have/had issues with my skin big time. I would be dry and flakey, oily in areas creating blackheads, acne, whiteheads. Ugh, and during THAT time of the month? Forget it.

I've recently started a new treatment, which mainly has been all about diet along with some of my favorite products and my skin is FABULOUS. I can't even tell you. This morning I looked in the mirror and it was GLOWING. My skin tone was even, no red patches, no bumps, small pores, blackheads are almost entirely gone.

Here is everything I use and WHEN I use it.

1. Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads w/ Salycilic acid. I use these at night to get rid of all the dirt and oil that has accumulated throughout the day.

2. Neutrogena Blackhead Clearing 2 in 1 Pads: I use these TWICE a week. They are very strong and when I used them daily they actually made me break out more, but they really helped with the blackheads, so I cut back to using this pad at night only 2x per week.

3. Biore Blemish Fighting Ice Cleaner: I use this in the MORNING 2x per week. I tend to use a lot of products so I alternate days so I'm not going too crazy. One morning I'll wake up and just rinse my face with warm water, the next day I'll use this stuff, the next day just warm water, and so forth.

4. Proactive Refining Mask: I find this stuff in the mall on the Proactive carts. I hate Proactive, would never recommend it but the Refining Mask is GOLDEN for spot treatments if you break out. It's a sulfur based mask which is PHENOMENAL at drying out acne over night and making it noticeablly smaller and less red by morning. You can use it either as spot treatment, OR as an entire face mask. I do it both ways and actually sleep with this stuff on my face. It's gentle and doesn't leave red blotches on my skin that other spot treatments do.

5. Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion: I use this ONCE every two weeks. It is a great scrub to get rid of the dull surface skin cells, to turn over skin and to get the baby butt skin hiding underneath. It smooths, evens skin tone, and makes your face super soft.

6. I've been drinking 1 Liter of water PER day. I get a gigantic Poland Spring and keep it with me all day.

7. I've been cutting out red meat. I eat lean meats, turkey, chicken, tuna fish, and eating fruits and vegetables every single day. In the morning I'll have a mix of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries, these fruits are LOADED with antioxidants which clear your skin of impurities. Lunch, i'll have lean meat, tomatoes, eggplants, apples, and a snack of some almonds.

I've literally cut out ALL garbage from my diet. No cookies, chips, cakes, pasteries, donuts, etc. You'll be surprised, I thought it would be so hard to get rid of junk but just after a couple of days getting the nutrients I SHOULD be getting, I am never hungry, I eat small meals 4x per day, and I never crave junk.

8. Most important! I've been taking a daily multivitamin, One a Day women's active vitamin (every morning), along with an Omega-3 Fish Oil 1000mg supplement (2x per day, AM and PM) The Omega-3 is something that pretty much everyone does not get enough of. It improves dry skin, it clears complexion, it evens skin tone. (If you decide on starting a Fish Oil supplement, be careful because some brands are not as pure as others, and may contain toxins and metals found in the fish. Make sure if you pick up an oil that it says "Molecularly distlled to remove pesticides, PCB's and heavy metals." I like Natrol Omega-3 Fish Oil. It's definitely a bit more expensive, but there's no way I'm putting toxins and metals into my body. Get the lemon flavored ones as well. It cuts back on "fish burps" XP

9. I've also been running! The exertion and sweat from running has totally been clearing my complexion up as well.

10. Don't forget the SPF moisturizer in the day! I use Aveeno calming lotion w/SPF every morning.

11. Get 7-8 hours of sleep!

I know it sounds like a lot, but nothing has ever worked for me. I suddenly got all this motivation and my skin has NEVER looked as good as it does now.

Holy crap this was long. :X

What's the best skin care regime for a 26 yr old female with problem skin?

emilysever

I'm 26 years old and still have problem skin. Mostly older scarring and occasional break outs. What's the best affordable skin care line? Currently I mix up neutrogena face wash with proactive and I'm diligent about lotion with SPF 25. Any tips to keep my skin fresh and healthy?

Answer
Use natural ingrediants to make your own skin care items.

Do a face mask twice a week:

1 tsp Matcha Powder (Its basically green tea powder)
1 egg
2 tsp Lemon Juice
1 Tbsp Honey

Apply on face, leave on for 15 minutes, rinse with luke warm water. This helps with acne scars, oily skin that cause breakouts, and keeps skin feeling healthy and fresh. And insanely affordable too.

And drink LOTS of water.

I don't want to spend 10+ years of my life in school studying for a career in dermatology. I'm interested in hair and skin care but I'm not interested in cosmetology. I like learning about what products cause aging and giving other people advice on what products to use to keep their hair safe from breakage. I also like nutrition and keeping your body fit and healthy. Have any ideas of any careers that fall into my interest?

Answer
This sounds like Cosmotologist and/or Esthetician.

There are lower level nutrition programs that teach you the basics and it's up to you to keep up to date from there.

And I want to clarify, schooling for a physician, any physician, is 8 years (other than a few specialized compressed programs). 4 years undergrad and 4 years med school. After that, you are off to residency where you are basically doing paid on the job training. For Derm, it's 3-4 years. So, yes, it's more education, but the pay is about 10 times more ANNUALLY.

why does itching everyday after shower?

saif BD

Is there solution for this problem? everday after shower start itching for approximiatly 1/2 an hour specialy on both hands and legs? but there is no spot or seed on skin visualy just creat thrill for itchy? what it is the matter? or i must disclose with skin care physician? i would be glad have an good suggestion.thanks.

Answer
The soap you use in the shower not only removes any dirt but it also removes the natural protective oils that keep some moisture in your skin. As a result your surface skin dries without your just lost surface oil protection which you cannot see - AND your skin then itches more as it further dries. One way to reduce the itching would be to use a moisturizing soap, and then after the shower, apply some moisturizing body lotion to the parts that itch. Good luck!

Answer
There are a lot of good sites to print coupons from. Here are some of the better ones:

coupons.com
couponnetwork.com
smartsource.com
redplum.com
target.com

Also, here is a coupon site you should find really helpful.

http://www.loyalcouponer.com

They have a database that lets you search for specific coupons for items you may have on your shopping list. It will show you all available coupons for the product and direct you to the sponsoring website (most of the time the manufacturers website), to print it off. This site is also great at keeping you up to date on the latest deals, promotions, free stuff, samples and more.

Best of luck couponing!!!

Is it okay to mention in the resume the beauty website I own?

shyone

My website is all about beauty and woman's health. It contains reviews of cosmetics, astro stuff and many other things that deal with women's personal development including psychology. Usually, I do not say anything about my own personal life over there. But yeah, I do mention my opinions on cosmetics stuff. Is it okay to include address of such site in the resume?

Answer
Only if you make profit on it, or it has a decent amount of followers (over 100 for sure).
If so, then you have a strong attribute to add to your resume! (:

How much does a skin care specialist earn an hour and for their first year?

Sissy

I want to study cosmetology, but I'm more interested in skin care. I know cosmetologists get paid like 6 an hour, but how much does a skin care specialist get paid??

Answer
An hourly rate completely depends on who you are working for and what the terms of your employment are. For example, if you rent your own space and are doing simple european facials, you can generally charge between $65 and $150 per hour depending on where you are located (nowhere, Virginia or New York City). If you own the space, this is all yours - do 4 a day and you have yourself a nice $100,000 per year job. If you enter into a "split" agreement with a spa or clinic owner, you may get a 50% split of whatever you do, so the same facial, you will get $35 to $75 for each treatment. The difference here is that you have no expenses or overhead to deal with.

Lastly, if you have specialty equipment like a LipoMax, or DermaPod machine, for example, you can charge a LOT more for each treatment - well into the hundreds. Also- you can set up repeat treatments to get a much higher average customer value.

how do i make essential oils for skin care?

Melissa

ok i am a Huge fan of lavender scented items and i would really like to know how to make essential oils that smell great like lavender, i would like to use the oils in homemade candles, aroma therapy in baths and even skin care. can anyone help????

plus ; i tend to have severe cases of depression and aches and pain all over my body what kind of herbal remedies can i use to make essential bath oils to relax my mind and body?what are any other herbs that are great for skin care as well as aromatherapy?

Answer
Making an essential oil is an extremely complex process. First, you must have access to the plants that are grown in untainted and non-pesticide soil. Then, you have to be able to distill the oil, which without the proper equipment, you can't just do it in your house. The right species of Lavender must be used Lavandula angustifolia and not an inferior Lavandin which is what most aromatherapy products are made from. I would encourage you to purchase the oils you need; you ensure purity that way and won't have to hassle with actually trying to make an oil yourself.

Essential oils can be extremely therapeutic in nature and very medicinal. I have helped MANY clients get over depression and chronic pain using essential oils and teaching them how to take care of themselves. I have a lot of free information on my website:
http://stayhealthyandwell.com/category/essential-oil-guide/

A word on different brands. As a natural health practitioner, I am constantly working with people to educate them about herbal therapies and natural health care. Just like with wine and cigars, there are different grades to essential oils and some are certainly better than others. Most available in the health food store are filled with chemicals and should NEVER be taken internally to deal with a health condition. Some oils, are pure and very complex with the medicinal constituents that are within them and can perform miraculous changes in the body. So do your research and make sure you get some help from someone that knows what they're doing. Depression is nothing to take lightly (I used to suffer with it myself), but it can be overcome.

Best wishes!

NO MATTER which link you picked, they all suggest the same foods. Your hair may be the fastest-growing tissue in the body but, unlike the skin, it cannot repair itself. That is why getting the right balance of vitamins and proteins is imperative. Don't expect to look like you've stepped out of a hair commercial the day after you've changed your diet. It is likely to take at least three months before you actually see tangible results. Hair is dead, but hair also has electrical energy; the negative charge of damaged hair can lead to flyways and unruly hair.

Growing healthy hair doesn't come from a bottle or pills and hair products do not speed hair growth. Any hair oil, is another form to keep hair moisturized, nothing more. If you're in HS, your hair & nails should be growing normally, and as healthily as possible, since you're eating healthy foods. But when hair isn't growing as fast, it's because they've been tampered with: chemicals, hair straightening, etc. . .

Cutting your split ends yourself, spend 5-10 mins. on a sunny day so you can easily spot them, using a 2" scissors, cut strand by strand, section by section, allowing new growth to take over. Then 2x a year, get a good hair cut. This won't speed things up, but it will make the hair look healthier while it's growing. Even healthy hair like mine get them, due to normal brushing & styling. Hormonal changes can have a big effect on hair.

Remember: The hair industry is a billion dollar business, they sell products that cleans & condition the hair. They also sell products that damage and causes hair loss. They also DO NOT give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss due to 'abuse'. Mechanical, chemical, or thermal styling. Hair straighteners and relaxers top the hair products pose the greatest risks. Hair relaxers, related products marketed heavily to African-American women, are dangerous because they may contain powerful chemicals such as lye, a toxic substance also used in drain cleaners.

And I also have no ideas what i am going to name this line, so can you guys help!!! Below are some categories I would like the name to be around

-cute
-girl
-pink
-simple
-clean
-natural

Thanks!

Scrubs
and moisturizers based on SUGAR!

Answer
well, just have in mind your skin care line has to have moisturizing creams, exfoliators... and it could also have makeup (such as foundation or concealer)
I think "Simply Natural" is an awesome name, since it will be (hopefully!), just simply natural!! :)

Good luck!!!!

How many people really pay attention to the ingredients in skin care/makeup products?

Cindy S

I'm very curious to know how many people really understand how important ingredients are in cosmetics and skin care. Everything we put on our bodies gets absorbed into the blood stream and cause illness/diseases/even cancers. We get what we pay for and this is not an area to look for cheap products. What do you think?

Answer
no one knows.

How can I have a fresh look without wearing makeup?

I am 35 year old woman (people say I am pretty) an Indian with nice smooth skin (wheatish complexion) but I have vey bad dark circles around my under eyes so I have to hide/cover it up with makeup because wihtout makeup my face looks always tired and I look sick. I always have to wear a makeup because of dark circles, It's a work especially when I am in a hurry. How can I look refresh without or wearing less makeup?I need some tips. I would appreciate. Thanks

Answer
For those dark circles-you should use a hot/cold mask, cucumbers, and cologen cream. You can find these things at any drugstore or supermarket. To look refreshed you should try Olay products--like thier warming mask--it makes you feel good. Make sure to moisturize your face everyday-- as your gett ing older you are developing wrinkles--and sun damage--lotion is a perfect way to combat that damage. Also make sure you take your make-up off before you go to sleep--for that try Witch Hazel--you can find it at any drug store. For light make-up use luminous colors like gold, peaches, light browns, etc.. make your eyes pop and your whole face glow--stay away from red lip sticks--try nudes and pinks--get alot of sleep--and take care of your skin and you will be great--and drink alot of water.

What is your experience with skin cancer?

william

My wife is only 35 years old and has had 3 spots removed from her face/back. She just found out that she has to get 2 more spots removed from her face. Is this going to go on for the rest of her life or will it stop at some point.

Answer
I have had many pre-cancerous lesions removed. I go to a dermatologist every year to be examined. Any time one of my marks starts looking or acting suspicious I have it cut off for testing or frozen off (with liquid nitrogen) if it is small enough and in the "just in case" category.
She will probably not be having marks removed for the rest of her life (depending on how 'marked up' she is...if she has tons of spots then obviously there is more to look at and more to go wrong) but she will likely be under care of a dermatologist for many years to come.

Melanoma is a horrible, horrible type of cancer because it is usually found way too late and therefore usually fatal (I've heard over 60%). If your wife is only 35 then chances are these spots are being removed as "just in case" or preventative. This is GREAT. It means that her odds have gone up astronomically (I'm no doctor obviously but personal experience says close to 100%).

What type of makeup and skin care routine should I choose?

Labels:

skin care products for black women on Where Can You Find Skin Care Products For Black Women?
skin care products for black women image

Schnuppe

I was wondering what type of makeup should I choose for combination skin, I'm 30 if that makes a difference. And what about a basic skin care routine
I read an article about makeup and It said that it was better to choose black mascara over brown and the same goes for eyeliner.
I've never used makeup that much I'm just clueless
I just need some ideas on basic skin care and makeup
thanks

Answer
Start by looking up products for your skin type, which is combination. One of my favorite lines of skincare is Oil of Olay, I'm 25 now and things that I used at 18 or 21 just don't cut it anymore. Start with a good basic cleanser, one that won't overdry your skin. Follow up your cleanser with a good moisturizer, preferably one that can be used for night & day(saves money).
As far as makeup goes, use ANY color your heart desires. I'm a dark-skinned, african-american woman. I use black, brown, blue, plum, green, white, silver, etc. Eyeliners/Mascaras. Black are for people who want a dramatic lashes & lines, silvers/whites & lighter shades are for mostly for highlights, plums & browns are softer colors and add definition sans the drama of darker hues, like blues, greens and blacks.
Choose concealers/foundations/powders for combination/oily skin types. It's all trial & error. Go to your local Walmart or drugstore, pick up a few items to try, save or receipt & return/exchange things that you don't like.
Make-up is your private art, you're your own blank canvas, create a Masterpiece! :)

How do you deal with neighbors who are mean in a manner that pleases Allah?

I have two neighbors that have been driving me up the wall. One is an old woman who gossips a lot and is a busybody.

The other one has a child that screams in the wee hours of the night.
She has been badmouthing about my family (after my aunt confronted her) and my late grandmother who used to live in my house.

I have not dealt with the matter at hand but I am most curious: how do Muslims deal with such people?

**I am a convert

Answer
As salaamu 'alaikym warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, sister.

Insha'Allah, as to the neighbor who child cries at night, I would politely speak to her about the same inquiring if she might need some assistance with the child during the day that she might get some more rest so as to be better able to deal with the child during the might.

You might also find that the child has a health problem or some other difficulty and you assistance might make a big difference for the mother and the child. Alhumdulillah!

Insha'Allah, every time you busy body neighbor begins to back bite and gossip, change the subject to something totally unrelated like the weather, a pleasant news story you may have heard, and experience from your past, etc. You might also ask her about her hobbies, if she sews, knits, gardens, cooks and talk about that.

If she ask why you don't seem to be listening to her gossip politely explain to her that in Islam, back biting, gossiping and spreading rumors is haram/forbidden.

For both, keep them in your prayers during salaah asking Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala to guide them to the right path, and to allow them to discover the beauty, truth and wisdom that is Islam. Alhumdulillah!

In all cases, try to see what is going on with the other person from his or her point of view treating them with the same respect and kindness you would wish to receive. Alhumdulillah!

May we all be rightly guided.

ma'a salaam

(P.S., I am a revert, too. Alhumdulillah!)

How do people deal with the unexplainable death their dog?

out west

Our dog recently died a very painful death in the end. Massive internal bleeding brought on for no reason. Our vet and several others are stumped. He was in perfect health and died on his 8th birthday which is killing me. I have incredible guilt I should have gotten him to the vet sooner.

Answer
i started out on here in YA answering in the dogs section, and as tempting as it is to go into the possible reasons as to why this might have happened, you posted here in R&S, so i will answer from that perspective.

much the same as an unexpected and and unforeseen aneurysm can occur in seemingly healthy teenagers, massive injury can occur to our pets that leave us feeling as if we have been hit with a with a sucker punch to our soul.

do not torture yourself by replaying the events over and over in your mind. the "what if" game will only destroy and eat away at the beauty and happiness that your pet's life represented. in the end, what pain he might have had, he knew, in his canine mind, that he was with a master who had loved and protected and defended him all life, and there was no other safer place for him to be, no matter the circumstances.

you gave him the best life he could have ever had - this i'm sure of. you wouldn't be tortured with these feelings if you didn't care so much, and that type of owner treats and loves his pet well. the years you had with your dog were good ones, and he was lucky to have had them with you, instead of somewhere, anywhere else.

focus on the memories. remember a specific instance - a funny time chasing a ball, nipping at a bug, licking the toilet bowl water - anything good, and make that come to your mind when the dark thoughts threaten to take over. it will ease as time goes by...i've not been in your exact same situation, but i've been there as to the loss of a pet.

my thoughts and sympathies, as do the ((hugs)) from furry friends in the house here, go out to you and yours.
