Laser hair removal questions. ?

Q. Generally how much does it cost? And how safe is it?
Does anyone have any suggestions in what to look for in a laser hair removal center, or experience with one in the Nashville, tn area?

Answer
Laser hair removal is quite safe. The technology works best on people with dark hair and light skin, however, recent lasers can sometimes achieve results on darker skinned people as well. They will not work on light colored hair (white, grey, blonde, or red). If you have light colored hair, then you should consider electrolysis for permanent hair removal instead of lasers.

The laser hair removal industry has changed quite a bit in the last few years. Costs have come way down as more businesses have started offering this service. But this rapid change has resulted in a large price differential. I did a search in my area a year or two ago, and the prices varied by around three to four hundred percent. In other words, the most expensive prices where three to four times the least expensive. So you need to shop around beforehand.

Keep in mind that laser hair removal only targets hairs in a specific phase of their growth cycle. Because of this, you will need to have multiple sessions spread out over many months on order to achieve good clearance. Nearly every hair removal center offers a discount if you purchase a package deal. In other words, if you pay up front for 4 or 8 sessions in advance, you save quite a bit as compared to paying for each one separately. Some places will also offer guarantees when you buy a package, so if any stray hairs come back, you can have them taken care of for free. Before you commit to a package, you might consider purchasing a single treatment on a small area in order to try out the facility and see if you like them.

When choosing a facility, be sure to carefully ask what specific things are covered as part of a treatment area. For example, if you purchase a "lower legs" treatment, does that include the tops of the feet? Does it include the knees? In particular, intimate body areas seems to be described by a bewildering assortment of differing terminology, that varies from clinic to clinic. For example, the terms bikini, partial brazillian, full brazillian, french bikini, sphinx, hollywood, etc., can all mean the same thing, or refer to slightly or completely different treatments. Since there are no laws regarding these terms, each salon can use whatever crazy nomenclature they want to, and the only way you will know for sure what is included and what is not is to ask up front - in graphic detail! Be sure you do this when you are comparing prices, because what might seem like a less expensive price might, in fact, include less treatment area than another salon.

Laser hair removal is non-invasive, so cleanliness of the salon is not strictly important from a hygienic standpoint, although I would be uncomfortable in a place that was not. More important things to focus on would be the number of years (months?) of experience of the technicians. In some cases, the technicians are registered nurses - in others, they are cosmetologists. In general, the longer the person has been in the business, and the newer their equipment, the better. The best scenario would be somebody who has been doing it for at least five years, and in that timespan, upgraded their equipment to one of the newer models. This individual will have an in-depth knowledge of laser hair removal, and would be an ideal person to seek, regardless of how many degrees they have. Lastly, you can ask for references, or check out sites like Yelp, Angie's List, etc.

Another thing to ask about is the laser machine used by the center. There are a variety of models on the market. In general, the newer models are much more comfortable and effective than the order ones. Modern laser hair removal machines employ skin cooling mechanisms that makes the procedure more comfortable for the patient. There are two widespread techniques in use today. One shoots a spray of cold gas on your skin immediately after the laser pulses. The other uses a refrigerated metal contact point that glides across your skin just behind the laser. This second method requires the application of gel on your skin (the same stuff they use in ultrasound), so it is a tad more messy. Both work, and you may find you have a preference for one over the other.

I've included a link below to a site that contains extensive information on laser hair removal (as well as other methods). There are also some recommendations for technicians, some of which may be in your area. Good luck!
