Answer
Your skin is a living organ that constantly regenerates itself. The outer layer, called the epidermis, is as thin as a pencil line. It consists of a protective layer of skin cells that continually shed and give way to new cells. Below the epidermis are the dermis and hypodermis, two layers that produce the oil and collagen, that give your skin support, elasticity, and shine. Taking care of your skin might be very important for you, so before you spend money on skin products, it is important to know what type of skin you have and what kind of care it needs.

If you don't already have them, you will need to buy a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, exfoliant, cotton wool pads & a face mask. Unless you have full blown acne, products such as clean & clear, Oxy or Clearasil aren't recommended - these products are way too harsh and strip the skin, leaving it very dry and uncomfortable. Instead use natural, gently cleansing products which will remove excess oil and promote healthy, clear skin. However, never use a very rich moisturiser on oily skin! And don't use face-cleansing wipes every day in place of a cleanse-tone-moisturize routine.

Cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day - once in the morning before you put on makeup, and once at night before you go to bed.

Cleansing - first, wash your hands so you won't be transferring bacteria to your face. Splash your skin with warm water. Apply the cleanser, and leave it for a minute or so to allow it to dissolve dirt and makeup. Then remove, either with damp cotton pads or by splashing with warm water, gently wiping until ALL the cleanser is removed. Never leave any cleanser on your face, as this encourages spots and imperfections. Dry your face gently with a clean towel.

Tone. Apply a small amount of toner to a cotton wool pad and wipe over your face. This will make sure all the cleanser is removed.
Moisturize - when the toner is dried, apply a small blob of moisturizer, gently massaging into your face.

If you haven't applied enough moisturizer and your skin still feels a little tight, then apply a bit more. If you apply too much & it feels too oily, then gently blot with some tissue.

Exfoliate - this only needs to be done twice a week. I usually remove makeup first, then gently massage the exfoliator in for half a minute, rinse, tone & moisturize.

Face Mask - use a nice, natural face mask with Kaolin once or twice a week.Always make sure your skin is squeaky clean before applying the mask. Shower or have a hot bath whilst the mask is on to make it more effective.

The girl above me "black cat karma" didn't list her source - her answer was copied and pasted from this blog: www.xanga.com/ricebunny

I just wanted Miss Michelle Phan to get her credit for her mask and scrub discoveries =)

Skin care tips really do depend on what type of skin you have. Do you have normal, oily, combination, dry or just acne prone?

First off, you need to find a cleanser that works for your type of skin:

-Normal skin can go for gentle cleansers.
-Dry skin needs a cleanser that does not foam up. The less foam your cleanser produces the less drying it is for your skin. If you have dry skin, try a cream cleanser.
-Combination skin needs a cleanser that wont dry out the normal skin on the face but needs to be powerful enough to get rid of the oil in the oily places. Try a gel cleanser or a cream cleanser.
-Oily skin needs a foaming cleanser. It helps get rid of oil more than other cleansers.
-Acne prone skin needs a cleanser with of course, acne fighting ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

*wash your face TWICE a day. Once in the morning and once at night. Not more, not less.

I have combination skin that is acne prone: I use Neutrogena Acne cream cleanser. I concentrate washing my T-zone.

Secondly, Moisturize after you cleanse.

All skin needs a good moisturizer. Find one that works for your skin type.

I use olay daily moisturizer with spf 15. Protecting your skin from harmful sun damage is a must for healthy, glowing skin! Find a moisturizer with spf 15 or higher. Because I have oily skin around my T-zone area (forehead, nose and chin) i use a sunscreen that contains silicone which helps absorb oil from the surface of my skin so I am less oily than I am without it =)
I use Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunblock in spf 55.

Third of all, Exfoliate!

Pimples are from clogged pores. Exfoliating helps get rid of dead skin cells and leave your skin glowing, soft and smooth! I dont like the idea of exfoliating too often because it sounds harsh. I usually exfoliate once a week with a gentle scrub. Some people exfoliate twice a day! Find what works best for your skin. After you exofliate, make sure you put on some rich moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

Bottom line: find what works best for you.

Good luck and have fun!
