How should I phrase this sentence?

Labels:

Q. I'm writing on women's roles and I'm having trouble trying to phrase this sentence.. Here are the pieces of what I want to say. How would you word it?

From olden times (I will get the specific date) when women were expected to stay at home and take care of the children while men were out doing the work, from WWI when women were now expected to take over the men's jobs while they were overseas, from the risky skin-showing flapper girls in the 1920s to the (I'll insert something here) there is today, the image of what a women should be determined by society is constantly changing.

This is a HUGE run on sentence, I know. But I have no idea how to word it to make it make sense but still include everything in there. Please help!

Answer
How about something like this...

For centuries, the role of the woman in the household was to tend to the affairs of the home and care of the children while the man was expected to be working as the financial provider for the family. But at pivotal historical points, world events dictated that the role of women would need to change. And change it did: In the New World, women's suffrage began as early as 1756 when Lydia Chapin Taft was allowed to vote in three New England town meetings. World War I required women to take over jobs traditionally held by men so that the men could fight overseas. This new-found freedom (and responsibility) emboldened the formerly 'weaker sex' to what were perceived as shocking and risque activities and dress--as seen, for example, iin the skin-showing flapper girls in the 1920s. The image of what a woman 'should be' or 'could do' was further amplified by the efforts of Nineteenth Amendment, and later, by the Women's Liberation Movement of the 60's. And the image continues to evolve.

Marijuana reactions... Mine is different - Good or bad?

Q. So me and friends smoke from time to time.

When I smoke, Im usually the most chill person in the group. I can laugh, and make jokes, but usually Im the first one to fall asleep from being so burnt out.

Whilst my friends are all laughing and have a jolly good time.

The high effect isnt bad, I love it. I feel tiny bubbles underneath my skin. Im just wondering if its weird that I react differently compared to numerous friends.

Answer
Tolerance, just smoke more often and youl stay awake longer
Marijuana isnt bad for you. Its only illegal because Harry Anslinger
(head of treasury in 1930s) was having his multibillion industry threatened, so he appointed his nefew as head of dangerous drugs and narcotics, secret meetings were held to try to find a way to make one of the worlds best resources out of the way. Eventually the made a movie called "reefer madness"(look it up on google video[not on youtube]). All it did was tell lies to trick the naive americans into teahing thier children not to, and so on. America has been suffering eversince. in the 1920s it was predicted that all car fuil would be run an hemp, but those greedy bastards had to go and screw up everything for america. if you realy care go to norml.org (gives many facts of benifits of marijuana + pro-legalization of marijuana) if you have any questions or would like to know some helpful info when chosing where you stand you can email me (yahoo, if you scan these please dont delete my comment for this) nirvana270793@yahoo.com

Im 20 years old for the past couple days iv been feeling tired almost week. And in evenings after long day it feels lik im nervous or butterlies also my face is breaking out wit pimples. Wats rong? ?

Answer
Sounds like a classic case of an OVERACID tummy. Quick, chew a
couple of Tums antiacid tablets. If not at hand use the 1920s trick of
putting a pinch of Soda (bicarb) on your tongue and washing it down
with a swallow of water. The soda neutralizes the acid and the water
dilutes it. I like the Walmart's tablets, peppermint, 150 for $2.
I chew a 'tums' each night after brushing my teeth. It does double duty.
It helps with bad mouth acids/cavities and keeps my tummy from
growling in the night.
Pepto Bismol is an old remedy. Not much used these days.

For Acne see all the answers in the Skin care section.
I have some there.

Why do people go tanning?

3 things:
1. You don't look any better with a tan than you do natural, no matter how much you try to convince yourself
2. In 10 years you will look like a wrinkly old person
3. Do you not care about your health?
So why do people go tanning?

Answer
First off, i know this is long but this is the answer to your question:

in the 1920s, Coco Chanel accidentally got sunburnt while visiting the French Riviera. Her fans apparently liked the look and started to adopt darker skin tones themselves. Tanned skin became a trend partly because of Cocoâs status and the longing for her lifestyle by other members of society.

In addition, Parisians fell in love with Josephine Baker, a âcaramel-skinnedâ singer in Paris. Those who liked and idolized her wanted darker skin so they could be more like her. These two French women were two trendsetters of the transformation of tanned skin being viewed as fashionable, healthy, and luxurious, but not by the whole population.

In the 1940s, advertisements started appearing in womenâs magazines which encouraged sun bathing. At this time, swimsuits' skin coverage began decreasing, with the bikini making its appearance in 1946.

by the way, to that one person that says it makes you look orange, that's NOT from the sun.
That's them using self-tanners or tanning beds.
The natural sun will NOT make you orange.

What type of skin care was used in 1900, 1920, 1940, 1960, 2000, now?

Q. I have been looking EVERYWHERE for this answer and so far I can only find modern skin care (which I already know about because I'm in beauty school ><).

I will greatly appreciate any and all answers one may have. Thank you!

Answer
Actually, up until right around the 1920s or so, skin care changed very little; primarily because there weren't many advancements in the technologies. Make-up has been used since the beginning of civilization, by both men and women, and the process of rendering fat into glycerin and soap, via a saponification reaction with a caustic such as lye and water as a catalyst, has prehistoric roots. Until the 1920s, the only materials anyone had for skincare, other than the aformentioned soap and a rare few others, were what they found naturally. Basically plant and animal extracts. Trial and error did land upon some useful combinations. The ancient Chinese and Egyptians are noted for relatively saphisticated technology for their time, while the Romans have been known to use compounds containing lead and mercury and a variety of others that, in hindsight, should have been passed on. Eh, if hindsight were foresight, they would've called it foresight.

Anyhoo, around the 1920s to the 1940s, chemistry developed to the point where the manipulation of the fatty alcohol chains found in nature could be reacted or otherwise acted upon or refined to make things like cetyl alcohol which is still used all of the time. Look at the ingredient dec of your conditioner. In the decades between, many more reactions have been perfected like hydrolization, istearification, and polymerization, just to name a few. Now, we even use genetic manipulation in our efforts. Its really gotten very soffisticated in the last couple of decades. Stick with beauty school. You guys are going to be like doctors soon.

If its not obvious, I'm a formulating R&D chemist in cosmetics and personal care. Sorry for the long-windedness & poor spelling which I'm not checking.

How to know what race/ancestry I am?

skyhigh

So, basically I am hispanic, from south america. I am more on the lighter side, though, but have always wondered what other race/ancestry I have. I mean, I know I have indigenous blood of the natives from south america, but I most have other race/ancestry. I mean my grandmother on my moms side told me, that her grandfather was black-African,. As for my dad, he told me that my grandmother (I never met her since she died when my dad was a teenager) was light skinned and had european features. In my moms case, she told me that her father (my grandfather's family) had some Italian or french ancestry along with Japanese ancestry. In all that's what they all told me, and im not sure if its true though, although there is no reason for them to lie. Sometimes I think I do have all these race/ancestries in me. 1. native ancestry: i have straight black hair 2. black ancestry: when coming out of the shower my hair becomes a bit curly (my sister had curly hair when she was a baby and as for my grandmother on my moms side, she has naturally curly hair.) 3. european: i fall more in the light skinned category, I am always told that i am light skinned by many people 4. asian: I am sometimes confused and told people that i look somewhat asian, especially when i smile. So is it possible that i have all these races in my blood, and if not how can i find out.

p.s. all my grandparents are dead, except for my moms mom, since my moms dad was much older than my grandmother (he was born in 1914 and he was in the marines during the late 1930s and he would travel around the many countries through marine sea ships). In my dad side both grandparents are dead (both were born in the early 1920s). So I dont know who to really ask, since when i ask my other relatives dont really know. I know some of you might say who cares, but im just curious.
@freethinker...thanks genius, you sound very ignorant by the way. How can just by looking at myself in the mirror will i know what race/ancestry i am, since i believe i might have many races in my blood. how the heck would i know i have them. its like telling a black person he is only black, but you never know if he/she has white or native American in them, since you dont see these features in them. thanks asshole
i once met a asian lady who had a white looking baby, and many people looked at her as if she was the foster mom, but when my moms spoke to her, she said that she really was the mom, just that the father was white....so as you can see you big idiot its not a look in the mirror scenario always,,,you dumb piece of shit

Answer
It sounds like you are of mixed race. European and Indigenous Natives of South America.
I am not sure where you come up with the African because of curly hair. Hair curl comes from a curled hair shaft and not ones race..
I also do not understand where you came up with Asian, just because someone thought you looked Asian.
Genealogy is the study and documentation of a specific direct ancestral lineage within a specific family.
Start with yourself and gather vital statistics on each generation one at a time as you proceed back.
Vital statistics are Birth, Marriage and Death dates and places.
Genealogists do not make assumptions and do not believe family stories are true without documentation.

You might want to check for your Grandfathers military record. My Father was in the Marines from 1926 - 1932, stationed in China with the 4th Marines, it took a long time to obtain the record because there was a fire in St Louis where the files are housed in the 1970's. However, I found a copy of the file in the National Archives.

DNA would give you ancient ancestry, and not what it considered modern ancestry, meaning results show traits from thousands of year ago.

One other suggestion, when asking genealogical question be polite, and do not response to stupid answers - it only encourages them.
