Why did John McCain dump his wife after she was crippled in a car accident?

98% Pure C

Does that sound like "Character" and "Family Values" to you?
------------------
Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a leading campaigner for veteransâ rights, said: âI have been following John McCainâs career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally. There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is â deceit.

âWhen he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him knew it.

âEventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought was better.

âThis is a guy who makes such a big deal about his character. He has no character. He is a fake. If there was any character in that first marriage, it all belonged to Carol.â

Answer
She wasn't the woman he left behind, the woman he had coveted while she was married to his friend. She ultimately didn't have the assets or power to launch his political career when he realized that his Navy career was going nowhere.

Plain and simple, he didn't want her anymore and he didn't have the character to try to make it work. He was OUT OF THERE as soon as he could rationalize it. Take a look at the timeline:

McCAIN, John Sidney, III

Born August 29, 1936 in Panama Canal Zone into career Navy family. He attends about 20 schools before he spending six years in Alexandria at two of the cityâs private all-boys schools. First at Saint Stephenâs, and then at Episcopal High School, a private prep boarding school in Alexandria, VA. Nicknamed âthe punkâ he prides himself as a tough guy, seemingly ready to fight at the drop of a hat. He does not excel academically and graduates in 1954.

1954-58 he attends the all-male US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. The Naval Academy is designed to give the academic and professional training needed to be effective naval and marine officers upon assignment after graduation. While there, he has run-ins with higher-ups, is disinclined to obey every rule, and graduates 5th from the bottom of his class (894/899). His running total of at least 100 demerits keeps him a regular member of the Century Club. Upon graduation, he is commissioned an ensign.

From 1958-60 he spends two and a half years as a naval aviator in training at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida and the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas. He earns a reputation as a party man, drives a Corvette, dates an exotic dancer named âMarie the Flame of Floridaâ, and spends all his free time on the beach or in a barracks room /turned bar and friendly gambling den. He would later say that he, âgenerally misused my good health and youthâ. He begins as a sub-par flier, with limited patience for studying aviation manuals. In 1960 he graduates from flight school and becomes a pilot of attack aircraft.

1960-early 64 served on the aircraft carriers USS Intrepid and USS Enterprise and is on duty on the Enterprise during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1964, he is rotated back to shore duty, serving nine months on the staff of the Naval Air Basic Training Command at Pensacola. He then becomes a flight instructor at Naval Air Station Meridian in Mississippi.

During the 1964 stint at Pensacola, he begins a relationship with newly divorced Carol Shepp, a tall, slim, former model who he knew from Annapolis as the wife of one of his classmates. On July 3, 1965, he marries Shepp in Philadelphia, adopts her 2 children, and their daughter, Sidney, is born in September 1966.

In December 1966, slated for upcoming Vietnam duty, he reports to a squadron in Jacksonville, Florida for A-4 Skyhawk training. March 1967, he joins the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, On July 25, 1967, Forrestal arrived in the Gulf of Tonkin, joining Operation Rolling Thunder, the 1965â1968 bombing campaign against North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. On July 29, 1967, while refueling to launch attacks, a Zuni rocket from an F-4 Phantom is accidentally fired across the carrierâs deck, striking either McCainâs A-4E Skyhawk or one near it, rupturing the Skyhawkâs fuel tank, which ignites the fuel and knocks two bombs loose. McCain escapes from his jet by climbing out the cockpit. The ensuing fire on board killed 134 sailors, injured scores of others, destroyed at least 20 aircraft, and took 24 hours to control. In Saigon the next day, McCain and told New York Times reporter R. W. Apple, Jr. that, âItâs a difficult thing to say. But now that Iâve seen what the bombs and the napalm did to the people on our ship, Iâm not so sure that I want to drop any more of that stuff on North Vietnamâ. With the Forrestal headed for repairs, McCain joins the Oriskany on September 30, 1967, for a tour he expected would finish early the next summer.

On October 26, 1967, while McCain is flying as part of a twenty-plane attack against a thermal power plant in central Hanoi, (a heavily defended target area that had almost always been off-limits to U.S. raids) McCainâs plane has its wing blown off by an anti-aircraft missile while pulling up after dropping its bombs. McCain fractures both arms and a leg while ejecting from his plane and nearly drowns after parachuting into Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi. He is taken prisoner and transported to Hanoiâs main Hoa Loa Prison, nicknamed the âHanoi Hiltonâ by American POWs. Although badly wounded, his captors refuse to give him medical care unless he gives them military information; they beat and interrogate him, but he only gives his name, rank, serial number, and date of birth. Only when the North Vietnamese discover that his father is a top admiral do they give him medical care and announce his capture. At this point, two days after his plane went down, his status as a POW makes the front pages of The New York Times and The Washington Post. Ultimately, under torture, he does break and gives up critical information on flight routes that result in a major loss of aircraft and lives. He is held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five and a half years.

The Paris Peace Accords are signed on January 27, 1973, ending direct U.S. involvement in the war.

On March 14, 1973 McCain is finally released from captivity and is reunited with his wife Carol, who had suffered her own crippling, near-death ordeal during his captivity, due to an automobile accident in December 1969 that left her facing months of operations and physical therapy. By the time McCain sees her, she is four inches shorter, on crutches, and substantially heavier.

By St. Patricks day of 1973 he is back in Florida. He attends the National War College from 1973-1974, whose mission is to prepare future leaders of the Armed Forces, State Department, and other civilian agencies for high-level policy, command, and staff responsibilities.

By late 1974, after 9 months of physical therapy, he is recuperated to the point he is able regain his flight status.

In 1976 is named commanding officer of the Navyâs largest squadron, the Replacement Air Group in Jacksonville, Fla.

In 1977 he is assigned to the Navyâs Senate liaison office on Capitol Hill in Washington, where he remains until 1981.

By 1979 it is clear that he will not make admiral like his father and grandfather. Having always dreamed of doing something great, at age 42 he finds himself with a stuttering military career and no base from which to go into politics.

His personal life is a mess, and although he is still living with his wife, he is also aggressively courting the 25 year old Cindy Hensley, who he met in April 1979 at a party in Honolulu and is as beautiful as she is rich. Over the next six months, he pursues her aggressively, flying around the country to see her. He begins a push to end his marriage.

In late 1979 the McCainsâ separate. McCain files for and obtains an uncontested divorce in Florida on April 2, 1980. McCain and Hensley are married on May 17, 1980.

On April 1, 1981, McCain retires as a Captain from the Navy and is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizonaâs 1st congressional district in 1982. He has a new wife, a new home state and a bright new political career.

For a candidate running on character and biography, it is an awkward time to remember. He abandons the wife who had reared their three children while he was a POW, herself gravely injured for 4+ of those years, and then begins his political career with the resources of his new wifeâs family.

Reelected to the Ninety-ninth Congress in 1984
Elected to the United States Senate in 1986
Reelected in 1992, 1998, and 2004 for the term ending January 3, 2011.
2008-Presumed Republican candidate for President of the United States.

This is not a man with a record that deserves any respect. I agree that he has no character either in his personal relationships or in his beliefs, which is obvious by his flip flopping on issues. He is a classic example of someone who has Daddy issues and is desperate to prove himself worthy. He didn't make Admiral but he could be President! Not that he really gives a rats ass about anything or anyone but himself. The guy is a classic narcissist, as is GWB. What is wrong with people that they are so ignorant of mental illness that they don't see who McCain is?
