99 cent stores are mainly in CA/AZ/TX/NV they sell primarly name brand, consumable general merchandise. Stores are clean and full service. They offer a significant value on their everyday needs items. They sell regularly available products including food and beverages, produce deli, and other basic gerocery items, also health, beauty and household supplies... yes at 99 cents

Answer
The answer is simple. The labor is cheap and machines do most of the work. When you purchase items in bulk as a franchise or a major purchaser you are given a bargain price that the average person would not receive.

For example a 2 liter pop might be $1.00 for you but when a company purchases more then let's say +2500 (example) they receive the 2 liter pop for $.30.
