I live in Minnesota and I have always wanted to get a monkey as a pet, where can I get one?
Also does anybody know how much a good pet type one would cost?

Answer
You can't. ALL monkeys are illegal as pets in MN. If you were to illegally purchase one then you would only be sentencing it to death. It would be euthanized as soon as someone found out. And trust me, when you have a monkey people gossip, so someone WOULD find out! If you really love them so much, then you won't take the chance of having one killed. Now, if you decide to move out of state where you can legally own one, please still do your homework on this. Monkeys are not what you think. I have 2 Capuchins and I have the scars all over me to prove it. They bite, scratch, slap, 'scream', pull hair, and more. EVERYDAY. In fact, last night was one of the worst incidents I've ever had with my monkeys. I was giving one of them a bath (which they hate!). Normally he does semi OK. He always scratches me, but he is pretty tolerant with me handling him. Anyways, someone came in the house when I was bathing him and he was already upset about being bathed, but then he got even more upset about someone coming in. Anyways, you would freak if you saw my arms right now. He tore the skin all over both of my arms, hands, and my chest. And 2 seconds later he's just back to hugging and kissing me. That's just normal for a monkey. You cannot get upset when they hurt you. They don't know any better. Are you tolerant enough to deal with that?

Also, you can't have them around your friends. So, if this is for some popularity, forget it now! They hate strangers. They will bite, scratch, or pull hair of any stranger who tries to touch them. Unless you are looking for a lawsuit, you can't have monkeys around strangers. Also, even something little like pulling hair is considered an attack and could cause it to be euthanized.

Monkeys are also very expensive. You won't find a Capuchin for less than $7,500. And that's cheap. However, you must have at least 2 monkeys. 1 monkey alone will be depressed. Human companionship is NOT enough. They will pace back and forth for hours at a time, scratch until their hair falls out, and inflict pain by chewing on their own limbs. You MUST have at least 2 monkeys! Also, you will need a large enclosure, which could easily cost you thousands of dollars. The minimum cage size for most states is 6x6x6, but the larger the better. It's cruel to keep them in a small area. Do you plan on diapering them? Diapers are around $11-12 dollars for a small pack. They can easily use 8 diapers (or more) a day. Diapers for the next 40+ years is not cheap. Monkeys biscuits are a must! NO HUMAN FOOD IS ALLOWED. It kills them. Monkeys get diabetes 100 times quicker than humans. Ice cream, cookies, chips, etc. will kill monkeys. Biscuits are about $25 per bag. Monkeys should be kept on Prima-treats (vitamins) which are $80-140 per package. Yeah, not cheap. Vet bills run about 8 times what a dog vet visit would cost. Most states require at least 1 annual check up. Average price is around $500 give or take some. If you monkey ever needs a surgery, you might as well take out a 2nd morgage to pay for it!

Now, I'm not against anyone owning a monkey. I just can't stand it when people get them and they are not educated enough about how to care for them. 98% of exotics die within the 1st 2 years because the owners aren't educated enough about them. Don't be one of those owners! If you REALLY want one enough that you'd be willing to move out of state, then be sure to research everything about their care, diet, housing, enrichment, behavior, and husbandry. Feel free to email me anytime with any questions you might have. I'd be more than glad to help.
