those lotions seems to be the only thing that tans me, and doesnt make me burn, but they can range anywhere from 50-70 dollars. is there anything that is somewhat like that that could possibly be cheaper? thank you!!
i tan outside.. if that helps?

Answer
There are some things you just can't skimp on, quality lotion is one of them. I trust the professional products because that is all they do, make products for tanning and skin care. With a quality lotion you're preventing a lot of skin damage and that's going to make your tan deeper, darker and last longer.

You can get those products, in most cases for about half off if you buy on-line. Lotion Junkie is just one place I know of.

Bloom and Whisper by Designer Skin are two really good lotions and they're about $25.00 on-line, but $50.00 salon retail.

How to tan on a sunbed?

I've got blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin that usually burns. I've just started going on the sunbeds because im sick of fake tan! It never works right. I went on for 6 minutes and I was ok just my back burnt a little. Please tell me:

How long i should wait before going back on the sunbeds?
Will i eventually build up a tan?
Any comments or sugestions please! But i don't want the lecture on skin cancer. Thanks!

Answer
Yay! something I can DEFINITELY help you with.

OK, I'm a natural red-head (more auburn) but I still got stuck with pale-a** skin, and I can burn in 10 minutes if out in the sun! Oh yeah, it totally sucks. I too HHHHAAATTEEE being so translucent, but was always afraid to tan, and, like you, went through failure after failure of fake-tan streaky nightmares.

I figured I'd just try to go tanning at a tanning salon (what's the worst that could happen? - I get a little red and stop going) I did a lot of research before-hand, talked to my dermatologist, etc. There's a couple things you should know/and tips that might help you....

1) Sunlight (in moderation) will NOT cause skin cancer. the bulbs in a tanning salon are different from those of natural sunlight. They produce both UVA and UVB rays. - (I won't go into detail, but the UVB's are the one's that cause your skin to burn)

2) EVERYONE's skin has a natural amount of melanin (the pigment in your skin that produces a tan), even us naturally pastey people =) - your body can make MORE of this, and WILL, depending on the amount of sun exposure it's exposed to! YAYY!! (The only way you burn is when the melanin in your skin isn't in high enough quantities to protect yuor skin from sun-damage/burning with a tan, and thus, we burn!)

3) Buy and use a GOOD tanning lotion! There's a TON on the market, so make sure you find one that has UVB blockers (limit the burning), and caffeine (which helps your skin's health). I started using Halo by Designer Skin, and (of course) it was discontinued. I stuck with the same brand and use Luminosity by Designer Skin - it smells great, has a tanning-ingredient in it that enhances your tanning-bed tan, and has made my skintone SUPER EVEN, soooo smooth, and I have not burned once!!
*These lotions can run VERY expensive - so buy them on ebay!

4) After discussing with my dermatologist, as long as I don't BURN, I'm OK. Any amount of sun exposure is slightly frowned upon, but there ARE ways to do it safely!. I started out with going for 6 minutes, everyday. If my skin turned a little pink, I skipped a day and let the melanin level in my skin increase and my skin to "heal".

I now am a very light-beige color; my skin in soooo silky smooth to the touch, and I look all around more healthy, better in clothes (esp white!) etc! YAY! Going everyday may seem like a chore, but it's the only way for us to keep the melanin being produced in our skin, since we're so pre-disposed to low levels.

(Btw - I'm pre-med in school, care a TON about my health, and DON'T plan on aging prematurely lol. - So i'm not a tan-junkie, and there ARE ways to tan safely!) =) Hope this helped!!
