What level tanning do I need to use?

I've been tanning a couple times before, and now that winter is coming around, I'm getting extremely white. I just want some advice as to what tanning bed I should use. When i went tanning before, I went on Level 1 for 8 minutes, and that didn't really work at all, I barely achieved the tan I was looking for. Some advice on that would help, and also, do I have to use the goggles they give me when I go tanning? I didn't use goggles before, and my eyes were fine, but people tell me that the UV rays still get into your eyes even though you close them. I didn't wear them because I didn't want raccoon eyes. Thanks to anyone who answers!
Answer
âBEAUTY FADES. DUMB IS FORVERâ â Judge Judy.
No RATIONAL and RESPONSIBLE Yahoo! Answer member is going to help you SCATHE your skin, RAVAGE the health of your skin, and DIE young in the name of beauty â a foolish one, in fact.
There is NO such thing as a safe tan from the sun or sunbed! The ONLY safe way to tan is with a well-formulated self-tanner for your specific skin type.
FACT â Both indoor tanning and sun tanning cause sun damage!
FACT â Tanning bed damages your skin at a higher intensity of UV radiation than the already dangerous sun exposure.
FACT â Ultraviolet-A ray penetrates the dermis and deteriorates collagen and elastic fibers.
FACT â Ultraviolet-B ray penetrates the epidermis and induces inflammation.
FACT â Both UV-rays cause sun damage and significantly increases your risk of skin cancer.
You may have a counter-argument for me, for example:
1)Light (UVB) therapy is used to treat psoriasis.
Rebuttal: True! However, phototherapy should ONLY be performed by a health care provider such as a board-certified dermatologist. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends at-home UVB light bulb to treat psoriasis. There is a major difference here; that is, you do not need to tan or expose your whole body to high levels of UV radiation to treat psoriasis. Even with at-home treatments, it is imperative to have check-ups with your physician for sun damage and skin cancer. The National Psoriasis Foundation DISAPPROVE S people from using tanning bed to treat psoriasis. When performed in a doctorâs practice, psoriasis clinic, or hospital, the UVB intensity is controlled and minimal as well as constant doctor supervision. Lastly, there are a several other effective treatment options for psoriasis. There is no need to consider light there unless you have exhausted all of the other conservative and safer modalities.
Bottom Line: The research is CLEAR and the American Academy of Dermatology, Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and World Health Organization all concur: indoor tanning and sunbathing are dangerous â PERIOD.
End of story.

My 1 Year old chocolate lab has been having trouble with her ears?
thetallywa
She has been to the vet and has had a course of antibiotics and ear drops but she is still shaking and rubbing at them, i am taking her back to the vets, has anybody else had this problem with a lab are know what might be happening?
Answer
My friend has had Labs for years, she takes them to the Vet constantly, they always have ear mites or some kind of infection. The Vet told her that it was because the labs ears flop over and the ear canal doesn't dry out making a perfect environment for ear mites, fungus growth and infection. I researched this problem and found this formula that dog handlers and dog show participants use to prevent these problems, because the AKC won't allow dogs to be shown without a clean bill of health.
Formula:
Warning: Do not use this ear cleaning solution on dogs with ruptured ear drums, or on dogs with open sores or wounds in the ear area.
An ear exam by a veterinarian is recommended prior to beginning treatment with this ear cleaning solution.
The ingredients you'll need are white vinegar, powdered boric acid, isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), and Betadine antiseptic solution. Generic versions of the Betadine are known as Povidone-Iodine, and those are fine, too. Just be sure not to use "Betadine Scrub", which is Betadine with a detergent added. What you want is "Betadine Solution" or generic "Povidone-Iodine Solution".
The first time we looked for the boric acid and the Betadine, we had no clue where to find it... but our local Pharmacist was happy to point us in the right direction. They used to keep boric acid in stock out in the pharmacy section of drug stores and you could buy it "over the counter". Recently, it's gotten a little harder to get after the regulations got tightened regarding selling it... since boric acid can be used to manufacture illegal drugs. These days, you usually won't find it just sitting out on the shelf of your local drug store. You usually do have to ask the pharmacist for it.
You'll also need an empty bottle to store your ear cleaning solution in, and from which you will squirt the solution in to your dog's ear. We recommend use of a plastic bottle with a long applicator snout, and with markings on the outside that show fluid levels in ounces. This makes it very easy to measure the ingredients as you pour them in to the bottle. A great place to find these is at beauty supply stores, as they are commonly used for hair-coloring solutions.
What you see in the picture to the right is our final product. Here are the directions for mixing the solution together. Be sure to follow them in the order listed... I'll spare you the explanation of the chemistry involved, but trust me... to get the boric acid to dissolve properly, you need to do it exactly like this:
Pour 6 ounces of isopropyl alcohol in to your applicator bottle. (This is where those ounce measuring lines on the outside of the bottle really come in handy.) Next, add 1/2 tablespoon of boric acid powder. An easy way to do that is to measure the powder, dump it on to a piece of paper, fold the paper in half and use the paper as a funnel to get the powder in to the plastic applicator bottle. Be careful not to get any boric acid on your skin or clothing. If you do, wash it off immediately.
Shake the solution up really well, until the boric acid powder is fully dissolved. Next, add 2 ounces of white vinegar. Shake it up some more. Finally, add one teaspoon of the generic Betadine antiseptic, and shake it some more. The solution should take on coloring similar to ice tea. Be careful not to get any of the Betadine on your skin or clothing. If you do, wash it off immediately.
That's it! You're ready to move on to the hardest part now... getting your Lab to let you squirt this stuff inside the ear canal.
Applying this in to your Lab's ears is usually easiest if you have a two-person team... one to hold the dog still with the ear up and out of the way, and the other person to squirt the solution in to the ear. All you have to do is squirt it in there until you have completely filled the ear canal with cleaning solution. But don't let go of the dog quite yet. Fold the ear back down over the ear canal, and use your hand to rub things around so that the ear cleaning solution gets sloshed around inside there pretty well. Keep the dog still for a minute or so... because as soon as you let go, the dog's going to shake his head, and a lot of that cleaning solution is going to go flying out. If you get any of the ear cleaning solution on your skin, wash it off as soon as possible.
If you don't have someone who can help you hold the dog while you apply the cleaning solution, an alternative is to use a grooming table with a noose. The noose will keep the dog's head immobilized enough for you to do the job yourself.
Apply the cleaning solution to your dog's ears daily until you start to see some improvement. Once things get better, you can cut back to once a week... and when you're fully satisfied with the condition of the ear you can go two weeks between treatments. The ear cleaning solution can be stored at room temperature and, as far as I know, does not go bad with

Can you eat as much fruit as you want without gaining weight?

Some health movements, like 80/10/10 raw veganism, say that you can eat as much fruits and vegetables as you want and need as long as you stay low on fats. What do you think? I think Dr. Graham says to eat at least 2500 calories a day if you are female.
Anyone have experience on this diet?
Answer
Hi E_J,
â¦after a couple of years of raw food diet experience and research...I can only say:
Yes, you can eat as much fruit as you wish (i.e. carbohydrates - approx. 80%) as long as you stay low on fat (approx. 10%) and protein (approx. 10%). Eating as much greens and vegetables as you can on the raw vegan diet is key also!!!
Because:
Among other issues, fat in your blood can, to some extent, âblockâ proper assimilation of sugar into your body and you can potentially suffer from âsugar hits/highsâ,..., even candida etc.
But if you donât âblockâ yourself with excessive fat/processed food intake your body takes all the nutrition it needs and eliminates what it does not require. Thatâs the beauty of the living foods diet - if done right (e.g. 80/10/10) â you can enjoy tons of yummy raw fruits, veggies and foods without worrying about your figure, ever! :)
In response to âDying to be skinnyâ post, you definitely can get in enough protein (in fact, the quality of the plant protein is much better than the animal protein!), calcium, omega 3s etc. on the raw vegan plant based diet!
Provided that you:
1. eat enough calories (agree with Deirdre on that one; depends on your level of activity â do you exercise a lot / have a sedentary job?).
Itâs easy to get in enough calories on the raw vegan diet.
E.g. 10 bananas = approx. 1000 cal / 2 litres of orange juice = approx. 1000 cal
2. get in loads of greens â they are a fab source of amino acids (i.e. protein), vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytonutrients, essential acids,â¦
Tip â Get into:
- green juices (loads of greens, some veggies and a bit fruit for taste maybe) for nutrition
- green smoothies - blended greens and fruits â packed with nutrition, calories, fibre,â¦and taste (yum!). Two big green smoothies a day and youâre basically sorted ;)
3. Make sure you eat good variety of raw foods
4. Learn some basic food-combining rules (e.g. starches donât go well with proteins but greens go well with everything)
5. Listen to your body to find out what is the best for YOU, we are all different and so have different needs in different stages of our lives (e.g. as youâll detoxify on the raw food diet over time you will intuitively understand the needs of your body more an more)â¦if unsure, you can always get a simple blood test.
This is a topic for books of material, and I had to keep the very long story short here, but feel free to drop me a line if you have any further questions at all or read more at source below.
Hope that helps! Good luck on your raw food journeyâ¦itâs so worth it! :)

Can You Actually Make A Healthy Chocolate Smoothie?
newadbusys
I sometimes get strong chocolate cravings. I don't like to keep chocolate bars around, due to temptations.
On warm evenings I love smoothies. So, one day I decided to make my regular vanilla smoothie into a chocolate smoothie.
Here is what's in it.
1 apple
1 banana (not very ripe)
soy milk
turbinado sugar
a dash of salt
vanilla xtract
chocolate syrup
Ice of course
This is soooo good. I wonder, is it really good for you.
What do you think?
Answer
instead of using chocolate syrup, try using cocoa, and perhaps whatever sugar substitute if the cocoa needs sweetening. Cocoa has good stuff in it (though don't ask me what cause I can remember....) and plain cocoa is healthier than chocolate syrup. But other than that I think it looks healthy!

Woo! Check this link out, its got everything nutritional about cocoa!
ok, I just read dark chocolate (maybe melt that for your smoothie instead.) is good and so check out this article!
In its NATURAL state, that is. Chocolate comes from cacao beans, which are extremely nutritious and beneficial to your health! Let's go over some benefits of CACAO, courtesy of LiveSuperFoods.com.
Many people consider eating chocolate a âguilty pleasure.â But the reputation of chocolate as a junk food should more accurately be attributed to the harmful effects of commercial processing and refining techniques, and the other ingredients commonly added, most notably white sugar. All chocolate is made from the cacao (cocoa) bean, and cacao beans in their natural, unprocessed, unadulterated state are rich in nutrients and beneficial to health.
Why Unprocessed Chocolate is Good for You
Antioxidants: Cacao has more antioxidant flavonoids than any food tested so far, including blueberries, red wine, and black and green teas. In fact, it has up to four times the quantity of antioxidants found in green tea. Health benefits of these antioxidants include:
* Promote cardiovascular health - Help dilate bloods vessels, reduce blood clotting, improve circulation, help regulate heartbeat and blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol, and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attacks.
* Protect from environmental and metabolic toxins - Help repair and resist damage caused by free radicals, and may reduce risk of certain cancers.
Neurotransmitters: By increasing the levels of specific neurotransmitters in our brains, cacao promotes positive outlook, facilitates rejuvenation and simply helps us feel good.
* Serotonin - Cacao raises the level of serotonin in the brain; thus acts as an anti-depressant, helps reduce PMS systems, and promotes a sense of well-being.
* Endorphins - Cacao stimulates the secretion of endorphins, producing a pleasurable sensation similar to the ârunnerâs highâ a jogger feels after running several miles.
* Phenylethylamine - Found in chocolate, phenylethylamine is also created within the brain and released when we are in love. Acts as mild mood elevator and anti-depressant, and helps increase focus and alertness.
* Anandamide - Anandamide is known as the âbliss chemicalâ because it is released by the brain when we are feeling great. Cacao contains both N-acylethanolamines, believed to temporarily increase the levels of anandamide in the brain, and enzyme inhibitors that slow its breakdown. Promotes relaxation, and helps us feel good longer. (Also, cacao contains inhibitors that slow down the natural breakdown of anandamide, which in turn makes this natural 'good' feeling last longer.)
Essential Minerals: Cacao beans are rich in a number of essential minerals, including magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium and manganese.
* Magnesium - Cacao seems to be the #1 source of magnesium of any food. Magnesium balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, and helps regulate heartbeat and blood pressure. Magnesium deficiency, present in 80% of Americans, is linked with PMT, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and joint problems.
* Sulfur - Cacao is high in the beauty mineral sulfur. Sulfur builds strong nails and hair, promotes beautiful skin, detoxifies the liver, and supports healthy pancreas functioning.
Essential fats: There is a misperception that chocolate is fattening. In truth, the fats in cocoa butter are healthy fats. Cacao contains oleic acid, a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, also found in olive oil, that may raise good cholesterol. Also, substances found in cacao are known to help reduce appetite.
Important note - To fully benefit from chocolateâs wide array of nutrients, eat chocolate that is as close to its natural state as possible. Whole cacao beans and nibs are best. You lose many of the health benefits when you eat commercially produced chocolate.

What styling product should I use on my mixed textured hair?

I am an African American woman with mixed textured hair. The top of my head has wavy hair with mixed texture of normal and fine hair. The sides and back are curly fine hair with curls ranging between 1/4 inch curls to 3/4 inch sized curls. THIS IS NATURAL CHEMICALLY FREE HAIR.
Answer
Shampoo & condition the hair as usual, every 4-7 days, but continue to trim off the damaged hair, allowing new growth to take over. Use GENTLE shampoo. Applying a small drop amount of oil to wet hair can also act as a leave-in conditioner and provides excellent conditioning in preparation for the next shampooing.
Your hair is the most fragile of all hair types. They snap & break easily. So you need more TLCs than thin hair. No chemicals. No relaxers specially! No heating styling tools. Finger comb is best or use a wide tooth comb. Do what Oprah & Michelle Obama have been, going natural, using plastic curlers to set their hair. Use oil or conditioner to keep them moisturized. Heat & chemicals are your hair's worst enemies.
The hair of many black women is very fragile and studies have demonstrated that normal brushing and combing the hair can result in breakage. Brushing your hair 100-times a day is a no-no for your hair. Only comb and brush your hair to style it. Also avoid rubber bands or other implements that can physically cut into and break the hair shaft.
"You find people oiling hair every single day, the hair sweats and it doesnât get washed. What do you think happens? It goes limp and becomes thin because it is not breathing,â Shamillah Mohammed, a hairstylist at SUQA, says.
Google: Rhonda Lee. Copied & pasted from her getting fired @ the KTBS station.
"I am very proud of my African-American ancestry which includes my hair. For your edification: traditionally our hair doesn't grow downward. It grows upward."
"Many Black women use strong straightening agents in order to achieve a more European grade of hair and that is their choice. However in my case I don't find it necessary."
"I'm very proud of who I am and the standard of beauty I display. As women we come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, and levels of beauty."
"Showing little girls that being comfortable in the skin and HAIR God gave me is my contribution to society," the TV personality concluded.
Watch: Good Hair - Documentary by Chris Rock 2009. or Tyra Banks What is Good Hair. Black women spend 80% of all hair products. She's got good advice!
Michael âRahniâ Flowers, who served as Obamaâs hairstylist in Chicago for more than 20 years, knows full well the importance great hair plays in a womanâs lifeâand so does Michelle, he says. âSheâs always taken very good care of her hair,â Flowers explains. âHaving beautiful hair is such a sign of health and attractiveness, particularly for black women, because their hair tends to be very fragile, and it needs extra care. Having it look good at all times is an amazing feat in itself. âSheâs never been the kind of woman that obsessed over hair and makeup too much.â

How to get ombre or dip-dye on very dark relaxed hair?
Tiffany
Hi. I already asked a question about this but I forgot a couple details. Okay..
History of my hair-
When I was younger I always wore my hair natural. I am African-American and partially Native-American so my hair (in it's natural state) is coarse and SUPER THICK. My hair color is black with natural red undertones. My mom managed my hair for me and kept it pretty healthy and wanted to keep my hair natural for as long as possible. Then my mom decided it was time for me to start getting my hair relaxed. I first got it relaxed a little bit after I turned 12. I've been getting it relaxed about every 10 weeks since then. Also, I've never dyed my hair, never used any bleach or peroxide. Nope, nothing. I have went to get bangs cut a couple of times and the person who relaxes my hair cuts off the split ends of my hair every once in awhile.
Now: I'm almost 15 and my hair is slightly past shoulder-length. Right now, I'm trying to grow my hair a little longer. I use a shampoo & conditioner that does not use parabens, silicones, sulfates, alcohol, blah blah blah and it's mineral and plant based. I wash my hair once a week ( I wait 2 weeks after I relax it) and I deep condition my hair and I oil it. And I use this product chi silk infusion which I LOVE. I like my natural hair color. When I part my hair, sometimes you can see the lighter parts of my hair. Now, since I like my natural hair color for the most part and don't want to go through the trouble of my roots or anything, I only want to dye the tips of my hair. I honestly don't care if the ends of my hair turn out super bright or if they're just tinted a different color. I just want it to look a little different. Now here's what I want and don't want.
1. I don't want to have to use bleach or anything that will cause bad damage/breakage to my hair or leave it dry.
2. The dye or whatever has to be safe to use on my hair and I would prefer it to be a natural product.
3. If you EXTREMELY suggest I just leave my hair alone, please tell me.
Also, I'm going to wait until my hair is at the desired length before I do anything. Plus I am looking for great haircare tips and products in general :) Thank you!

First of all, heat & chemicals are hair's worst enemies. The relaxers on your head, already contains formaldehyde causing cancer. If they're dye, they're all chemicals, even Henna which is supposed to be better for you than reg. box dye. It's a good read! Google: Henna for Hair Warnings.
Celebrity wears two-tone hair dye all the time, trying to grow out their dye. They call that look ombre hair color â darker roots, lighter ends â but colorists sees that fading. Women are wanting dimensional color with natural highlights that look like they've been playing out in the sun. On Fashion Police 1-29-13 episode, Khloe Kardashian said: "I had that in 2011!"
"Ombre is the number one poorly done color in this country! It takes a lot of blending and finesse to look natural. The key is to highlight the whole head, then deepen just the roots. Unfortunately, a lot of the ombre I see today is bad - I'm ready for that to be retired! Dye should make hair look expensive and chic. Otherwise, what's the point?" ~ Harry Josh, Hollywood's top hairstylist, who have given Gisele ombre color for 13 years.
They DO SELL OMBRE kits. They also sell hair extensions that you can clip on, comes in various colors, 2/$5 @ Claire's and take them out when you get home. They're fun, funky & safe!
Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.

London, Feb 20, 2013 I've been saying that since 2009.
Hair dyes, which include home hair colouring kits and those used at pricey salons, are linked to deadly cancer-causing chemicals, warn scientists. In 2009 the Mail revealed that women who used hair dyes more than nine times a year had a 60% greater risk of contracting blood cancer.
A year later the European Commission banned 22 hair dyes which put long-term users at risk of bladder cancer. < < < <
